The Professional Development Centre's programme gives schools the opportunity to lead a group of schools, working with other partners including at least one university, to deliver high quality support for teachers and leaders at all stages in their career.
School Direct - a unique way to gain Qualified Teaching Status (QTS)
The School Direct Training Programme focuses on developing teaching skills and placements in the classroom are a key component of the course. Whitefield works in partnership with the University of East London.
The primary programme focusses on special educational needs and placements are offered in SEN and mainstream settings. The secondary programme is subject-based and involves relevant mainstream placements.
We offer both salaried and unsalaried training opportunities. The School Direct Training Programme (unsalaried) is for high-quality graduates who want to feel part of a school team whilst training. You’ll pay fees but may be eligible for a bursary.
The ‘salaried route’ is an employment-based path for high-quality experienced graduates with at least three years’ work experience. You will earn a salary while you train. Find out more, including available placements
RQF Level 2 or and Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
These qualifications are not specific to special education needs settings and are suitable for anyone, particularly those working as a teaching assistant who would like to develop their role further.
Previously known as NVQs, these qualifications have been redesigned, first to QCF and now to 'RQF' – Regulated Qualifications Framework. These are still level 2 and level 3 qualifications, but are now broken into smaller modules, compared with the old NVQs. Each module is designed to be is applicable to different working roles within schools. This has opened up training opportunities for staff in schools that do not work directly with children and those who work on a voluntary basis.

Run in partnership with Kingston University, Foundation Degrees are higher education qualifications which combine academic study with work-based learning. They provide a training pathway for those who would like remain in work whilst studying for a higher education award.
Early Years Foundation Degree
This degree is specifically designed for early years practitioners who have an appropriate Level 3 qualification and at least two years post qualifying experience. You must be working at least 16 hours per week with children from birth to five years old within an early years setting.
Supporting Teaching and Learning
This foundation degree is for workers and volunteers in 'paraprofessional' areas who support teaching and learning. This may be in classrooms as learning support assistants or teaching assistants, or in related roles, such as learning mentors linked to schools or colleges.
Modules explore subjects such as the world of education, ways of supporting learners with additional educational needs, and psychological, social and emotional influences on behaviour. You must be working at least 16 hours per week in an educational setting, have a level 3 qualification and hold a GCSE minimum Grade C (or equivalent) or Functional Skills in English.
