Whitefield Academy Trust is an accredited National Teaching School. Our work providing education, training and information for staff at Whitefield and other schools across North East London and the East of England is coordinated by the Professional Development Centre.
We have been a recognised provider of school-based higher education since 1988 and have been in partnership with Kingston University in London since 1994. The Professional Development Centre runs foundation degrees with Kingston University(Early Years Education) and with Greenwich University (Supporting Teaching & Learning). All new members of our teaching staff receive an induction programme organised by the centre and individual schools. Teachers who are appointed to promoted posts within the school receive a management training course which is aimed at harnessing and developing their leadership, management and administration skills. We also support staff who are following a nationally recognised management course run by the National College of School Leadership or a similar provider.
Non-teaching staff at Whitefield receive a systematic programme of training and development too. After their induction programme, classroom assistants continue their learning through our progression scheme, which has been developed by our Higher Level Teaching Assistants. We also offer Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) courses at levels 2 and 3 for Teaching Assistants. These courses replace old-style NVQs and QCFs and are validated by City and Guilds.

The Professional Development Centre provides a range of other courses which aim to develop and update colleagues’ skills and practice in specific areas. For example, we organise training sessions and workshops in first aid, safeguarding, positive behaviour support, life saving, food hygiene, key movers, mini-bus driving, (MIDAS training) mentoring, equality and diversity and Government and school priority areas for development.
The training and development of our staff and students is supported by the Research Library. Our library offers a lending service for books. All members of staff are entitled to free membership and can borrow up to four books at a time, which they can keep for four weeks. Students can also join the library and use the facilities for a small fee. Renewals and reservations can be made in person or by telephone.
