Congratulations to Whitefield School Sports Teacher, Maria Papazoglou, who has been named London Sports Teacher of the Year.
The accolade – awarded by ‘TeamUp’, a programme jointly run by the England and Wales Cricket Board, England Hockey and England Netball was announced at the Copper Box Arena on the Olympic Park.
Maria, who was up against three sports teachers from mainstream schools in the shortlist, says that one of the best things about the awards was the opportunity to explain to the wider sporting community that, yes, students at special schools can take part in a wide variety of sports and can be serious competitors. She says that she felt particularly proud seeing the Whitefield logo displayed on the Copper Box’s giant screens.
When Maria was first nominated, she said she already felt like a winner “To inspire the students is the most important thing for me and to see them enjoying sport is what makes my job so enjoyable.” she says. Maria sees the award as being for the whole school, so the trophy will find a home in the already bulging cabinet.
